A car explosion in southern Moscow on Monday claimed the life of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior commander in the Russian Armed Forces. The blast occurred in a parking lot adjacent to a residential building, according to local media reports. Sarvarov, who led the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff, was severely injured and later died from his wounds, authorities confirmed.
Investigation Underway
The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case immediately following the incident and said the motive behind the attack is still unknown. Officials have not provided details on the type of explosive used or the method of detonation, but confirmed the case is being treated as a deliberate killing. Investigators are actively gathering evidence to piece together the sequence of events.
Potential Foreign Link
Russian authorities are exploring multiple leads, including the possibility of involvement by Ukrainian intelligence. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said. She added that forensic and explosives examinations have been ordered, witnesses are being interviewed, and security camera footage is under review.
Kyiv Remains Silent
Ukrainian officials have not responded to the allegations, and Russian authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or provided evidence linking the attack to a foreign actor.
Part of a Pattern
The killing follows a series of attacks on senior Russian military figures since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. In December 2024, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed by a remotely detonated scooter, and Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in April after a car bomb exploded. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for either incident.
