Washington, August 30, 2025 — Senator Bernie Sanders has publicly called on Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to resign from his role as health secretary, citing serious risks to public health under his leadership.

    Criticism of Kennedy’s Leadership

In an op-ed for The New York Times, Sanders accused Kennedy of compromising the health and safety of Americans and demanded his immediate resignation. While acknowledging the administration’s slogan “Make America Healthy Again,” Sanders argued that Kennedy’s actions have run counter to this message by undermining scientific guidance and public health initiatives.

He pointed to the recent firing of CDC director Susan Monarez, along with the resignation of four senior CDC officials, who reportedly opposed Kennedy’s controversial policies. Sanders denounced Kennedy’s persistent anti-vaccine rhetoric and his promotion of conspiracy theories rejected by the scientific community.

Vaccine Safety and Public Health Concerns

Sanders noted Kennedy’s repeated claims that vaccines are unsafe and ineffective, highlighting that some of the experts he cites have had their medical credentials revoked and research retracted. The senator warned that Kennedy has long profited from spreading vaccine skepticism and is now using his HHS position to weaken public trust in science and health recommendations.

He cautioned that Kennedy’s approach could jeopardize childhood vaccination programs, putting children at risk for diseases such as measles, polio, and chickenpox, which were previously controlled through vaccination.

    Impact on Access to Healthcare

Sanders emphasized that under Kennedy’s leadership, access to COVID-19 vaccines for younger adults and children has become more difficult, with added bureaucracy and higher costs. He warned that continued anti-vaccine messaging could further hinder public access to essential healthcare services.

    Bipartisan and Professional Criticism

Kennedy’s tenure has drawn criticism from both parties following CDC budget cuts and leadership upheaval. Over 750 current and former health officials signed a letter describing him as an “existential threat to public health,” accusing him of spreading misinformation and weakening the nation’s health infrastructure.

    Tragic Incident Highlights Misinformation Risks

The dangers of misinformation were underscored by a recent shooting at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, where a gunman, influenced by false vaccine claims, killed a police officer before taking his own life. The event has intensified concerns about the real-world impact of spreading medical misinformation.

Despite mounting scrutiny from lawmakers, health experts, and agency employees, Kennedy continues to defend his controversial policies, facing widespread opposition and concern.
