Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected Vladimir Putin’s proposal to meet in Moscow, calling it unrealistic. He told ABC News he cannot travel to the “capital of this terrorist” while Ukraine faces daily missile strikes and shelling. Zelenskyy suggested that Putin should visit Kyiv for any discussions.
U.S. Advocates Direct Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump promoted in-person negotiations between Zelenskyy and Putin, highlighting the goal during his Alaska summit with the Russian leader. Trump stated that the two presidents would meet after Zelenskyy visits Washington and consults European leaders. Moscow, however, imposed additional conditions and escalated attacks, delaying the talks. Putin claimed he was “ready” to meet this week but only in Moscow. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Zelenskyy’s invitation was “to talk, not to capitulate.” Zelenskyy noted that Russia offering meeting options alone shows limited willingness to negotiate. Trump told CBS News that talks will occur but provided no schedule.
Zelenskyy Condemns Escalation
On Saturday, Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched over 1,300 drones, nearly 900 guided bombs, and about 50 missiles in five days. The strikes struck 14 Ukrainian regions. Zelenskyy said Russia aims to prolong the war and turn diplomacy “into a blatant farce.” He urged Ukraine’s allies to strengthen sanctions, supply more weapons, and impose strict restrictions on Russian oil and gas trade.
