Cargo jet plunges into water after overshooting landing
Two ground personnel were killed at Hong Kong International Airport after a Boeing 747 freighter overshot a runway and ended up in the sea early Monday morning. The aircraft, belonging to ACT Airlines and flying on behalf of Emirates SkyCargo, was completing a flight from Dubai when it veered off the north runway around 3:50 a.m. local time. The plane tore through the airport’s outer fence, struck a patrol vehicle, and came to rest with its nose submerged offshore. All four crew members were safely rescued and sustained only minor injuries.

Authorities examine data for possible system failure
Investigators from the Air Accident Investigation Authority have begun analyzing the flight data and cockpit voice recorders recovered from the wreckage. Weather conditions at the time were reported as clear, leading officials to suspect a mechanical issue may have played a role. Technical teams are assessing the braking system and the condition of the runway surface while cleanup crews work to clear debris. The affected runway remains closed during the ongoing recovery operation.

Operations continue as safety procedures reviewed
Airport officials said flight disruptions were minimal as passenger traffic was rerouted to other runways. The Civil Aviation Department issued a statement offering condolences to the victims’ families and pledging a full investigation. The incident, regarded as one of the most serious in the airport’s recent history, has renewed calls for stricter safety measures to protect ground staff working close to aircraft operations.
