North Korea has conducted new hypersonic missile tests under the supervision of leader Kim Jong-un, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent. The tests come as Pyongyang ramps up weapons demonstrations ahead of its first major political gathering in five years, the Workers’ Party congress.
The announcement followed reports from neighboring countries that multiple ballistic missiles had been launched, which they described as provocative. The tests occurred just hours before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung left for China to meet President Xi Jinping.
Kim Stresses Military Readiness
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Sunday’s drill involved a hypersonic weapon system designed to assess combat readiness, improve missile units’ operational skills, and evaluate North Korea’s overall war deterrent.
“Through today’s launching drill, we can confirm that a very important technology task for national defence has been carried out,” Kim said. He added that the country must continue upgrading its military, with a particular focus on offensive weapons systems.
A functioning hypersonic missile could allow North Korea to penetrate missile defense systems in the United States and South Korea. While Pyongyang has conducted multiple tests in recent years, many experts remain skeptical about whether the missiles tested so far have consistently achieved the speed and maneuverability required to qualify as true hypersonic weapons.
Expanding Military Capabilities
In recent weeks, North Korea has also test-fired long-range strategic cruise missiles and new anti-air systems, while releasing images suggesting progress on its first nuclear-powered submarine. Analysts say these demonstrations aim to showcase advances in weapons development ahead of the Workers’ Party congress.
Observers are closely watching whether Kim will use the congress to signal a new approach to relations with the United States or to revive stalled denuclearization talks.
Regional Tensions and Global Reactions
The missile launches came shortly after a high-profile U.S. military operation that removed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and brought him to the United States on narco-terrorism conspiracy charges. North Korea condemned the operation, calling it proof of the “rogue and brutal nature of the U.S.”
Many experts suggest such developments reinforce Kim’s commitment to expanding North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, which he sees as essential to the survival of his government and national sovereignty. During the drill, Kim defended his nuclear program, saying recent geopolitical crises and complex international events demonstrate the need for a stronger deterrent.
