BP has warned it will write down between $4bn and $5bn from its green and low-carbon energy businesses as it refocuses on fossil fuels under new chair Albert Manifold. The writedown will mainly affect BP’s gas and transition divisions but is not expected to impact underlying profits when full-year results are published in February. The move reflects BP’s retreat from parts of its renewable strategy, including efforts to sell a stake in its solar arm Lightsource and the cancellation of hydrogen projects in the UK, Oman and Australia. BP shares dipped after the announcement, alongside news that oil trading weakened…
Diageo is reportedly considering selling its Chinese assets as part of a portfolio review under new chief executive Dave Lewis. The owner of Guinness and Johnnie Walker has enlisted Goldman Sachs and UBS to assess its operations in China, where sales have been declining, according to Bloomberg. Diageo’s holdings include a majority stake in Sichuan Swellfun, a Shanghai-listed producer and distributor of baijiu, whose shares have fallen sharply over the past year. Lewis, who took over on 1 January after leading turnarounds at Unilever and Tesco, is known for aggressive cost-cutting and asset sales. Diageo has already begun reshaping its…
Same-sex sexual behaviour among non-human primates may help reinforce social bonds and maintain group cohesion during environmental or social stress, according to new research. Writing in Nature Ecology & Evolution, scientists analysed documented cases across 59 primate species, including chimpanzees, Barbary macaques and mountain gorillas, finding the behaviour to be widespread rather than exceptional. The study, co-authored by Prof Vincent Savolainen of Imperial College London, suggests such behaviour is more common in species living in harsher environments, where food is scarce and predation risk is higher. It was also linked to longer lifespans, pronounced size differences between males and females,…
West Ham United edged past Queens Park Rangers in extra time to reach the FA Cup fourth round, securing a rare moment of relief for manager Nuno Espírito Santo. The tie went beyond 90 minutes despite West Ham’s Premier League status, underlining ongoing concerns about form and confidence. January signing Taty Castellanos proved decisive, heading home the winner after an assist from Crysencio Summerville, who also scored West Ham’s opener in one of his strongest displays for the club. QPR, led by Julien Stéphan, forced extra time through a second-half equaliser and earned praise for pushing top-flight opposition deep into…
Chelsea began the Liam Rosenior era with a comfortable 5-1 FA Cup victory over Charlton Athletic, advancing to the fourth round with a dominant display from a rotated side. Despite the convincing win, unrest among Chelsea’s travelling supporters overshadowed the result, with chants directed at the club’s owners continuing throughout the match. New head coach Liam Rosenior, appointed after Enzo Maresca’s departure, largely stuck to the existing system as Chelsea controlled possession and created chances at will. Goals from Jorrel Hato, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández sealed the rout, while youngster Estevão Willian impressed in a…
Bukayo Saka has agreed a new five-year contract with Arsenal that will make him one of the highest-paid players in the club’s history. The deal, which is expected to run until 2031, is understood to raise Saka’s salary to more than £15m per season, reflecting his importance to the team. Arsenal moved quickly to secure the England forward’s future after sporting director Andrea Berta prioritised renewing key contracts, following extensions for Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba. Saka, a Hale End academy graduate, has been central to Arsenal’s title push this season under Mikel Arteta and recently reiterated his desire to…
People who stop using weight-loss injections regain the weight they lost in under two years, according to a major new study. The analysis, led by researchers at the University of Oxford and published in the BMJ, reviewed 37 studies involving more than 9,000 participants. The drugs, known as GLP-1 agonists, mimic a hormone that suppresses appetite and were originally developed to treat diabetes. Researchers found that after stopping medication, participants regained weight at an average rate of 0.4kg per month, returning to their original weight in about 1.7 years. On average, users lost 8.3kg while on treatment but regained nearly…
Nottingham Forest boosted their survival hopes with a dramatic late victory over a struggling West Ham United at the London Stadium. West Ham led early in the second half but had a goal disallowed before Forest quickly responded, Nicolás Domínguez heading in an equaliser. The decisive moment came in the 89th minute when a clumsy challenge by Alphonse Areola resulted in a penalty, calmly converted by Morgan Gibbs-White. The defeat leaves West Ham seven points behind Forest in 17th place and winless in 10 matches under Nuno Espírito Santo. Despite flashes of improvement and debut appearances from new signings, defensive…
Manchester City will be without Rúben Dias for up to six weeks due to a hamstring injury, deepening their defensive crisis. Dias joins Joško Gvardiol on the sidelines, with the latter unlikely to play again this season after surgery. Manager Pep Guardiola has recalled academy defender Max Alleyne and may turn to the transfer market, with Marc Guéhi under consideration. City are also close to signing forward Antoine Semenyo, who is due for a medical after City agreed to meet his £65m release clause. Guardiola acknowledged the squad strain but insisted City will cope without major spending.
