The message reached workers at Amazon Web Services.
It wrongly said affected staff in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica had already lost their jobs.
Senior vice-president Colleen Aubrey signed the draft email.
Amazon described the layoffs as “Project Dawn” and linked them to future restructuring.
The company cut 14,000 corporate roles in October and continues reducing pandemic-era hiring.
