Russian forces launched a massive combined attack on Kyiv early Friday, killing at least four people and injuring 27. Fires broke out across multiple districts, and numerous residential buildings sustained severe damage. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescue workers could not retrieve two bodies from the rubble as they continued gathering information about the victims. Emergency crews responded immediately to the strikes, treating those injured and controlling the fires that erupted in various neighborhoods.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault, calling it a “deliberately calculated attack aimed at causing maximum harm to civilians and infrastructure.” He reported that the Russian strike involved 430 drones and 18 missiles, including ballistic and aeroballistic types. Nine people required hospitalization, including a pregnant woman. Among the wounded were two children, aged seven and ten. The explosions set off air defense alarms throughout the city as citizens sought shelter from the continuing bombardment.

    Widespread Damage and Civilian Impact

At least 11 multi-storey residential buildings across several districts suffered hits from the attack, according to Klitschko. In Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, falling debris sparked fires near a medical facility and inside a nonresidential building. Authorities urged residents to remain in shelters until the air raid alerts ended and warned that power and water outages were possible. In the surrounding region, Russian strikes damaged critical infrastructure and private homes, injuring at least six people. A 55-year-old man in Bila Tserkva suffered thermal burns and required hospitalization, regional head Mykola Kalashnyk said. The Ukrainian Air Force reported additional strikes in other parts of the country, spreading fear and disruption far beyond the capital.

    Russian Advances and Strategic Pressures

The assault on Kyiv coincides with Russia’s continued gains in southern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces withdrew from several villages in Zaporizhzhia amid intense fighting. Over the past month, the Russian Defense Ministry reported capturing nine settlements in Donetsk, eight in Zaporizhzhia, seven in Dnipropetrovsk, and five in Kharkiv regions. Despite these advances, Russia has faced heavy casualties and lost significant amounts of armor, slowing their overall progress.

The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russia’s siege of Pokrovsk has advanced slowly. Russian commanders deployed elite drone operators and special forces but spread their resources widely, limiting operational efficiency. Ukraine has managed to resist major breakthroughs, holding most frontlines and preventing rapid Russian expansion, while the ongoing bombardments of cities like Kyiv continue to inflict civilian suffering and disrupt daily life.
