Amorim blasts ‘too comfortable’ Manchester United after chaotic draw at Spurs

Ruben Amorim criticised his Manchester United side for becoming “too comfortable” after they threw away a lead twice before rescuing a 3-3 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

United looked in control for long stretches after Bryan Mbeumo’s opener, but goals from Mathys Tel and Richarlison turned the game on its head before Matthijs de Ligt salvaged a point with a dramatic 96th-minute header.

Despite extending their unbeaten run to five games, Amorim was frustrated with his team’s complacency.

“We have a lot of problems; we are just at the beginning,” Amorim said. “The results make it look like we’re improving, and we are, but we have a lot to do. We were comfortable in the game, but we should have been more aggressive. We need to feel the environment in the stadium — the three points were there for us.

“We felt too comfortable. One moment can change everything, and that’s what happened. We need to do better because the game was there to take.”

There was further concern for United after substitute Benjamin Šeško appeared to suffer a knee injury late on. “We think he has a problem, but let’s see,” Amorim added.

On the opposite bench, Thomas Frank defended his substitutions after some boos greeted his decision to replace Xavi Simons with Tel in the 79th minute — a move that quickly paid off when Tel equalised. “Sometimes you’re lucky,” Frank said. “But every time I make a change, it’s to win the game — and Tel did really well.”

Despite not having won a home league game since August, Frank said Spurs’ late rally showed their progress. “We’re moving in the right direction,” he said. “The way we fought back and almost won it — on another day we do.”
