Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom has captured extraordinary moments from Zambia’s Luangwa Valley — including a lion saving a pregnant hyena from wild dogs.
Filmed over five years, the series follows lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs as they battle for survival. Executive producer Mike Gunton said: “Only nature could write a story like this.”
Narrated by Attenborough, Kingdom features both tender and dramatic scenes — from newborn lion cubs to a wild dog pack rescuing one of their own from a crocodile.
But it also highlights human impacts such as snare traps and habitat loss. Scientific consultant Dr Matthew Becker said the footage offers vital conservation data.
Despite the challenges, the team hopes to inspire action. “Everything about these animals has been shaped by millions of years,” said producer Felicity Lanchester. “Now humans are changing that.”
