Georgian Security Forces Conduct Undercover Operation

Georgian authorities have apprehended three Chinese citizens accused of trying to buy uranium in an illicit deal. The State Security Service reported that the arrests occurred in Tbilisi during a planned sting operation in which the suspects sought to obtain around two kilograms of radioactive material for an estimated $400,000. Specialists later secured and analyzed the confiscated uranium.

Plot Involved Transit Through Russian Territory

According to investigators, the group allegedly intended to smuggle the uranium from Georgia to China, with Russia serving as a passage point. One of the suspects had entered Georgia illegally, while the others are believed to have managed logistics and communication from overseas. Law enforcement searched multiple residences in Tbilisi and Batumi, recovering items and digital evidence believed to be connected to the transaction.

Facing Serious Charges Under Georgian Law

The three men have been charged with the illegal possession and attempted trafficking of radioactive substances, offenses that carry penalties of up to ten years in prison under Georgian legislation. Officials emphasized that the arrests highlight the continuing global challenge of preventing nuclear material trafficking, a persistent threat that demands vigilant monitoring and international collaboration.
