Rescue teams recovered five decomposed migrant bodies in eastern Libya, 550 kilometers south of Tobruk.
Authorities transported the remains to Tobruk, calling the deaths part of the desert “death journey.”
Abreen, a local aid group, identified the victims as likely Sudanese and shared recovery photos online.

Migrants Risk Lives on Land and Sea

Migrants use Libya’s Mediterranean coast and borders with six countries to reach Europe.
People fleeing war and poverty face dangerous desert routes or perilous sea journeys.
In December, 61 migrants, including women and children, drowned off Zuwara.
In May, seven Sudanese migrants died after their vehicle broke down in the desert for 11 days.

    Europe Responds to Growing Migration

The IOM reported 787,000 migrants and refugees lived in Libya as of 2024.
The UNHCR said 32,400 people crossed from Libya to Europe in 2021, more than double 2020 totals.
In April, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed adding 30,000 Frontex personnel to strengthen Europe’s external borders.
